My husband and I went on a literary pilgrimage to England in the early 90s. While there, we went to Scarborough and saw ruins very similar to this picture. Everywhere we went, I had a sound tract playing in my head. How could anyone who loves music go to England without having one. This picture evoked an old Simon and Garfunkel song, “Are you going to Scarborough Faire”? The town of Scarborough, northeast of York, sits on a bluff overlooking the coast. It is famous for the awe-inspiring remains of a castle and a church. The ruins were partially destroyed in 1645 during the Civil War between Cromwell and Charles I. When we were there, the wind from the coast was eerily whipping through the ruins. It was a very beautiful location and definitely “worth a detour” as guide book say.

All that remained of what was once an imposing house on the cliff top was the bleak ruin overlooking the sea. She could remember the grand balls that were regularly held there—the elegant women in their colourful gowns and sparkling jewels, and the men in white tie and tails. How she wished she could turn back time, back to days of joy and happiness, before the fire that ended it all.

After the centuries the remains of the church still saddened me.
